Currently, a series of major long-term construction projects by the Department of Design and Construction (NYCDDC), Department of Transportation (NYCDOT) and MTA Metro North Railroad are taking place in the Grand Central neighborhood, primarily in the area immediately surrounding Grand Central Terminal. See below for information about the individual projects and their impacts.
Pershing Square West Public Plaza
Project participant(s): NYCDDC, NYCDOT
Description: Conversion of Pershing Square West (West Side of Park Avenue between East 41st and East 42nd Streets) to permanent pedestrian plaza. Once the project is complete, GCP will act as maintenance partner for the public plaza.
Anticipated date of completion: Summer 2017
Impacts: Pershing Square West (west side of Park Avenue between East 41st and 42nd Streets) is now closed 24/7 to vehicular traffic. Related subsurface work will impact the area on nights and weekends. Click here for a map showing the affected areas. During construction hours, you can expect the following:
– Increased levels of dust, noise and heavy equipment.
– Vehicular travel lane closures will be required, as well as detours. Warning signs will be posted in advance.
– Parking and driveway/loading dock restrictions, signs will be posted within the affected areas.
– Emergency vehicle access and pedestrian access to sidewalk and buildings will be maintained at all times.
For questions regarding the project, contact NYCDDC.
Grand Central Terminal Leak Remediation Project
Project participant(s): MTA Metro-North Railroad
Description: Viaduct roadway resurfacing; 45th Street bridge, Vanderbilt Avenue and 42nd Street facade work; Grand Central Terminal waterproofing.
Anticipated date of completion: 2017
Impacts: To facilitate facade work, Metro-North has established a work zone on Vanderbilt Avenue between 42nd and 45th Streets. Currently, Vanderbilt Avenue between 42nd and 45th Streets is closed to southbound vehicle traffic.
Work on the Park Avenue Viaduct roadway and bridges will take place at night and on weekends and may result in some street closures and traffic disruption during those times.
For the duration of the project, sidewalk corner work along Vanderbilt Avenue and waterproofing work on 42nd Street may result in some changes in the normal pedestrian flow.
