Starting March 1, 2024, NYC businesses need secure lid bins for trash collection. Applies citywide, regardless of goods sold. Any perishable material (trash or organic material) must be in a bin with a secure lid when set out on the curb for collection. This requirement does not apply to businesses that have waste collected from a loading dock.

It's recommended to store bins inside or in the rear yard if possible. Alternatively, when indoor storage isn't an option, bins can be placed within three feet of the building line when not being set out for collection. It's crucial to also keep bins tidy to allow for unobstructed pedestrian passage on the sidewalk.
